Daniel 1:8 says, "But Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine, and he asked the chief official for permission not to defile himself this way."
It happens very early every morning. It lasts for several hours. Those woodpeckers keep trying to get in my house. They peck at the windows in my living room. They will not stop pecking, and I am convinced that they will one day peck a hole in the glass and make it in. They may even break the entire window and get it. Those woodpeckers have resolve. That word resolve means to make a firm decision. In this Scripture, the word resolved is used and that it important. Daniel had already made his heart and mind up at this point, and he was continuing in his resolve. Daniel loved God, and he honored God in every way. It didn't matter that his circumstances changed drastically. It didn't matter that he was in a foreign land standing before a foreign king. God was his King, and nothing or no one could change that. Daniel resolved not to defile himself. He made a firm decision. You and I can have that resolve. It is merely a choice that we have to make. Daniel would not accept the royal food and wine that was offered him. We don't have to accept the royal food and wine of our day...things like fame, power, and position that lead to pride. We just have to resolve not to defile ourselves. We just have to resolve to keep God first in our lives. I wonder what the church, what our communities, what our world would look like if true Christ followers had resolve like Daniel today. I wonder what it would look like if we just had the resolve those woodpeckers at my front windows have. Will you resolve?
