"Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall." Proverbs 16:18
This past Thanksgiving, my wife and I took our kids to New York to see the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. It was amazing!!! And the kids liked it, too:) We saw some really big balloons, and we saw some really big heads. No kidding. We saw men dressed as past presidents, but their heads were huge! These guys came around the corner, and it seemed as though they were having a really hard time standing up straight. In fact, they were stumbling all over the place. I have no doubt it was because their heads were five times the size of their bodies. Now, I know this was just a silly part of the parade, but it definitely got me thinking. When I was a kid and I did something great on the baseball field or the basketball court (which wasn't too often), I remember my coaches telling me, "Don't get the big head!" The "big head" is just another way of saying don't be full of pride. Pride is a high opinion of one's own importance or merit. In other words, it's when you are full of yourself. You know, the "big head." The Bible says, "Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall." I wonder how many times people have laughed at me because I was stumbling around like those guys at the parade. One of them fell over, and it took a lot of time and a lot of help from others to finally get him back up on his feet. The same goes for me. I have fallen hard because of my "big head," and it was very difficult to get back up. I needed God's forgiveness and His help to get back up. God not only reminds me in His Word to be humble in spirit and in attitude, He also gave me a great example to follow: Jesus. Philippians 2:8 tells us that Jesus "humbled himself by becoming obedient to death - even death on a cross!" As Christ followers, we should look more like Jesus daily in every area of our lives. As each day passes do you look more and more like Jesus?
