In the book of Ephesians, Paul tells us clearly how the family should operate. Ephesians 6:1 says, "Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right." Ephesians 5:21-22 says, "Submit to one another our of reverence for Christ. Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord." Ephesians 5:25 says, "Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her." And let's not forget Ephesians 6:4, "Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord."
I don't know about you, but I love my family! I love my wife and kids, and I will do anything to protect them and help them in their daily walks. I also know how difficult it was for my mom and dad to raise me and my brothers...to protect us (mostly from ourselves) and to help us. They must have had fears. Looking back, I don't know how they did it. Today, in 2013, I have family fears. I have outside and inside fears. On the outside, I fear the violence that plagues our schools. I fear the reckless drivers on the road. I fear the moral decay that is eating away at our culture. I fear that my children will make the wrong choices. On the inside, I fear that I won't love my wife like Christ loved the church. I fear that I am exasperating my children...that I am not training them and instructing well enough in the Lord. It is hard to be a parent in 2013!
But then I read Isaiah 41:10, "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." I don't know what your fears are as a parent...your family fears in 2013. But I know this: God is with us! He will strengthen us, and He will help us! Not only should we believe this promise, but we should also claim this promise. Moms and dads, you are not in this alone. God loves the family. In fact, He created the family before He created the church (see Genesis). He is with us, and He can drive out our fears (see 1 John 4:16-19)! I would love to know how to pray for you and with you this year. So tell me, what are your family fears in 2013?
