"This is how we know we are in Him: The one who says he remains in Him should walk just as He walked." 1 John 2:5-6
I remember my dad throwing the baseball with me in the yard. One of his favorite pitchers was the Los Angeles Dodgers' Fernando Valenzuela. I knew my dad loved to watch him pitch, so I watched him closely. I watched the way he walked to the mound, the way he looked up to the sky and twirled quickly toward the plate, and the way he threw the ball and squared up to the plate on his follow through. I would practice with my dad on pitching like Fernando, and as each day went by, my dad would say, "You are getting closer and closer to looking just like him. But you have to get the walk to the mound right." As a kid, I was fascinated with walking to the mound like Fernando Valenzuela and throwing the ball like him, too. It reminded me of this passage in 1 John 2:3-6, "This is how we are sure that we have come to know Him: by keeping His commands. The one who says, 'I have come to know Him,' yet doesn't keep His commands, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoever keeps His word, truly in him the love of God is perfected. This is how we know we are in Him: The one who says he remains in Him should walk just as He walked." Some translations say "live as Jesus lived." If we truly love God, we will study His word...study the truth about His Son. We will learn from Jesus and model our lives after His. In other words, we will walk just as He walked. As an innocent kid, I wanted to walk and pitch like Fernando so I studied him day in and day out. As a born again Christ follower today, I want to walk as Jesus walked. Do you love God? Are you walking just as Jesus walked?
