Dads, moms, children…

"Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.  'Honor your father and mother' - which is the first commandment with a promise - so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth."  Ephesians 6:1-3

Before schools or churches ever existed, God created the family.  He brought Eve to Adam in the garden.  He told them to be fruitful and multiply.  He told them to go and eat freely.  He told them not to eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, "for when you eat from it you will certainly die."  Everything was going great!  But you know the rest of the story.  Adam and Eve sinned.  Sin entered the world in that one moment, and it has never been the same.  Today, we are still sinning.  We continue to rebel against God.  And we wonder why it is so hard to raise a family today???  Parents are struggling in many areas with their children.  The pitfalls that we are stepping in and the land mines that explode in our faces are our own doing.  We are in love with the world.  Instead of embracing the role of being parents to our children, we are embracing the role of being our children's best friends.  That is not the way God designed the family.  Fathers should be fathers!  Mothers should be mothers!  And children should be children!  There is a solution to all that is going wrong with the family today.  We must repent of our sin.  We must turn back to God and obey His commands as dads, moms, and children.  The apostle Paul tells us in Ephesians how the family should function.  He tells husbands to "love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her."  He tells wives to "submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord."  He tells children to "obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right."  He tells fathers "don't exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord."  Dads, moms, and children, we can enjoy life together.  We can be the family that God designed us to be.  But we have to turn away from the world's design of what a family should be and turn to God's design of what a family should be.  Sure, it takes a lot of work.  It takes a lot of love.  It takes a lot of discipline.  I don't know about you, but my family is worth the extra work and the extra love and the extra discipline.  Dads, moms, and children, let's give God glory in our families...starting today!

I would love to hear your comments...
