"The hearts of the wise make their mouths prudent, and their lips promote instruction." Proverbs 16:23
How can I be more positive? How can I be more encouraging? How can I have a clean mouth? These are question I am asked all the time. We all struggle with words. We struggle with words when we speak to our bosses, when we speak to our children, when we speak to our friends, and even when we speak to our enemies. You may not like the answer I give you in this blog. Jesus told us in Luke 6:45, "A good man brings good things out of the good things stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of." OUCH!!! If you have a rotten mouth, it is because you have a rotten heart. Maybe that is why in Proverbs 4:23, Solomon said, "Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life." Proverbs 16:21 says, "The wise in heart are called discerning, and gracious words promote instruction." Verse 23 says, "The hearts of the wise make their mouths prudent, and their lips promote instruction." If you want to be more positive with your words, if you want to be more encouraging with your words, and if you want to have a clean mouth, you have to start with your heart. If you have a wise heart, then your mouth will be prudent. What does that mean? It means you will know what to say and when to say it. We need hearts that are touched by God, filled by His Spirit. When that happens, we will be a people who speak words of power and wisdom. We will be a people of positive impact. Let's pray that God will give us hearts of wisdom so that we will have mouths of prudence.
