"I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me." Galatians 2:20
What do you think about when you see a cross today? Crosses are everywhere. Crosses decorate the rooms of our houses. Crosses decorate our bodies with elegant jewelry or elaborate tattoos. In the first century, crosses were not decorative. Crucifixion was one of the most brutal forms of punishment ever devised. Crosses, therefore, were a death sentence! Do we really understand that today? Do we really understand what it means to be a Christ follower? Jesus tells us in Luke 9:23, "Whoever wants to be My disciple must deny themselves and take up their crosses daily and follow Me." Then in Galatians 2:20, we hear Paul say, "I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me." As true Christ followers, we must embrace the truth of the cross and the truth of Jesus' command. We must "take up our cross daily." In other words, we have to die to self daily. Christ may have died on the cross, but He also defeated it when He rose from the grave three days later! He defeated death, He defeated sin, and He freed us to live victoriously for Him! Today, we can live for Him through faith. He loved us and gave Himself for us. Shouldn't we do the same?
