The workers are few…

"Then he said to his disciples, 'The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few."  Matthew 9:37

A couple of years ago, I bought a brand new truck.  I was excited about my truck!  About a week after I bought it, we decided to work in the yard.  We were cutting limbs out of trees and moving some things out of the shed.  My wife climbed into the driver's seat and was going to pull my truck away from the shed and into the driveway.  I could see her from across the yard, but it was too late.  On the passenger side there was a tree limb about to scratch the side of my truck.  I was screaming, "Stop!  Stop!  Stop!"  To no avail, she kept going.  The tree limb left a scratch about ten inches long on the passenger side of my truck.  I was devastated.  My heart was broken.  It took me several weeks to get over that scratch on the side of my truck.  I did everything I could do to wipe and to polish that scratch off my truck.  I wasn't angry at my wife.  Those things happen.  I was angry at the scratch.  I was angry at the tree.  I loved my new truck, and I wanted to take care of it.  I wanted to keep it shiny and new as long as I could.

In Matthew 9, we find Jesus and his disciples doing some incredible things.  But we also find out what was truly important to Jesus.  We find out what truly breaks his heart.  Matthew 9:35-38 says, "Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness.  When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.  Then he said to his disciples, 'The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few.  Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.'"  I find myself many times so worried, so compassionate, and so heart-broken over things that don't really matter in life.  And many times, I seem to turn away from the things that really matter, the things that I should be compassionate and heart-broken over.  I wonder today if Christ followers are truly concerned about the lost?  I wonder today if Christ followers are truly concerned about the harassed and the helpless people right before their very eyes?  Maybe I should say it this way:  I wonder if Jeff is more concerned about the ten inch scratch on his truck than he is the man, the woman, the boy, or the girl who will die and spend eternity in hell unless he shares the gospel with him/her?  In this world, we get caught up in what we think is life...the family, the job, the hobbies, the status, and so on and so on.  We need to focus each and everyday on what life really is (or WHO life really is.  Jesus said in John 14:6, "I am the way and the truth and the LIFE.  No one comes to the Father except through me."  We need to focus on the LIFE (JESUS).  We need to focus on sharing the LIFE (JESUS) with others...family, friends, coworkers, strangers.  The harvest is plentiful.  I am praying that God will give me the passion and the opportunity to get out in the field and work.  Why?  Because the workers are few...
