A healthy heart…

"Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it."  Proverbs 4:23

These days we hear a lot about working towards a "healthy heart."  People try eating better and exercising more.  "Healthy Heart" ads are all over the internet and the television.  I am even exercising everyday and trying to eat better foods...especially as I am getting older!  I definitely want to take care of my heart, for my sake and my family's sake.  And if eating better and exercising are the ways to do that, then I am all in.  But just as important as it is to have a healthy heart physically, I believe we need to have a healthy heart spiritually.  After all, it is the spiritual well-being of the heart that will make a difference in eternity.  You can eat the best foods and exercise everyday for the rest of your life and live to be 105, but if you die without the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior then it was all for nothing!  Solomon was one of the wisest men to ever live on the planet, and he had all that anyone could ever want.  He had money, friends, family, armies, houses, and lands.  But in Proverbs 4:23, he tells us what matters most of all:  "ABOVE ALL ELSE, GUARD YOUR HEART, FOR EVERYTHING YOU DO FLOWS FROM IT."  The first and best way to take care of your heart spiritually is surrender it to the Lord Jesus Christ.  Allow Him to come inside your heart and change it.  I love what the Bible tells us in Ezekiel 11:19.  God tells Ezekiel, "I will give them an UNDIVIDED HEART, and put a new spirit in them; I will REMOVE from them their HEART OF STONE and GIVE them a HEART OF FLESH."  God doesn't just clean up the heart when we surrender to Him through Jesus; He exchanges our heart of stone for a heart of flesh.  He gives us a new, undivided heart.  As we continue to follow God, we must continue to "guard" our hearts.  We can do this through Bible study, through prayer, and through fellowship with other believers.  Today, more than ever, we need to be "heart healthy" spiritually.  Are you "heart healthy?"

I would love to hear your comments...
