"Therefore say to the people of Israel, 'This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Repent! Turn from your idols and renounce all your detestable practices!" Ezekiel 14:6
The Israelites had a problem with idolatry. They had set up and worshiped many different idols, and this practice had separated them from the true God who had chosen them as His people. Idolatry was a sin then, and it is still a sin today. We have set up many idols in our lifetime, as well. We may not have carved any idols with our hands, be have carved them with our hearts. Our idols today are our families, our jobs, our hobbies, our status, and our wealth. God had taken a backseat to the idols the Israelites had set up, and today God has taken a backseat to our idols...our false gods. We wonder why we don't feel the powerful presence of God in our lives today, and we wail and we pray, but we get no answer from the "backseat" God we have chosen. And that is the problem: God will not take a backseat! He is holy and just. Matthew 15:8-9 says, "These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. They worship me in vain; their teachings are merely human rules." If we truly want to hear from God and if we truly want His powerful presence in our lives, we must turn from the idols that we have set up before Him. We must repent! Our hearts must choose Him and only Him to serve! He will not take the backseat in our lives, nor should we offer it to Him or expect Him to take it. Choose this day whom you will serve; as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord!
