"What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? Thanks be to God, who delivers my through Jesus Christ our Lord!" Romans 7:24-25
A deliverer is one who "sets the captives free" or one who "saves." Over the years, we have been fascinated with "superhero" stories. We've read the comic books. We've gone to the movies. We probably all have our favorite superhero, don't we? We love the stories of innocent people being set free or saved from the grips of evil. We love the story of deliverance!
In Romans 7, Paul sings his praises of a Hero, as well. He sings his praises for the Deliverer. Romans 7:21-25 says, "So I find this law at work: Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me. For in my inner being I delight in God's law; but I see another law at work in me, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within me. What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!" Paul recognized the evil that was right there with him. He recognized his sin. He also recognized that he needed to be rescued. He needed to be delivered, and he couldn't deliver himself. Much like Paul, I recognize the evil that is right here with me, too. My sin is too much for me. I can't rescue myself. But praise be to God for the Lord Jesus Christ, my Deliverer! He has rescued me from sin and death! I will sing His praises all day long:)
