"For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth." Psalm 139:13-15
When you look in the mirror do you like what you see? When you come home from work are you proud of your accomplishments? When you put the children in their beds and then you lie down in your bed, do you ever think about your self-worth? Today, more than ever, we are fighting an internal battle with self-worth. Many of us battle depression and low self-esteem on a daily basis. We base our self-worth on how well we do at our jobs or how well we raise our kids; we compare ourselves to other friends or co-workers or neighbors; we base our self-worth on what we have or what we don't have. What I have found is that when I base my self-worth on what I do or what I have or when I compare myself to others, it is a wild roller coaster ride! There are times when I am up, and there are times when I am down. It just seems like for most of us, the downs last a lot longer and there are more of them!
We need to come to the place in life where we understand who we truly are. We need to come to the place where the ups and downs of life don't affect my self-worth. God's Word says in Psalm 139:14 that we are "fearfully and wonderfully made." Ephesians 2:10 says, "For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do." We were created in the image of God by God. Jesus said in John 10:10 that he came "so that we could have life and have it to the full." We don't have worth or value because of who we are. We have worth and value because of who God is! In her book, Interpersonal Relationship Skills for Ministers, Jeanine Cannon Bozeman says, "Our worth is bestowed on us by God. We can seek His guidance as we nurture a healthy self-concept in ourselves and our children." If you have fallen into the trap of basing your self-worth on your own accomplishment (or lack of) or what others see and think of you, STOP and take a deep breath. TRUST in God and believe in His creative purpose and plan for you. You are fearfully and wonderfully made! You were knitted and woven together by His hands. You are God's handiwork! He has purpose for your life! You have worth because you belong to Him! Believe it!!!
