"So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them." Genesis 1:27
"Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations." Jeremiah 1:5
I woke up this morning and went through my daily routine. I prayed, did my morning workout, took a shower, and read some news reports. One news report really broke my heart. I know this is a touchy subject for many people, but I must share my heart and the Scriptures that I believe speak to this subject: abortion. I read a report that stated this: "Texas abortion bill fails to pass after epic filibuster." In other words, a measure to stop abortions after twenty weeks of pregnancy failed because of this filibuster. A measure that would have put higher standards on the doctors working at these clinics failed because of this filibuster. The filibuster in Texas, led by Senator Wendy Davis, drew comments on Twitter like these: "We have started something here they cannot stop. Thank y'all." "Something special is happening in Austin tonight. #StandWithWendy." Really! You call allowing abortions after twenty weeks of pregnancy "something special"? I am not surprised by this. People have been fighting for rights ever since creation. Hmm??? Creation. Genesis 1:1 says, "God created the heavens and the earth." Genesis 1:27 says, "So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them." The rights that we have in this life come from the Creator who created everything, including mankind. Genesis 2:7 goes on to say, "Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being." Back in Genesis 1:28, the Bible says, "God blessed them and said to them, 'Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it." God created. God blessed. We should be cheering and praising life...life that has been given by God. Instead, I woke up this morning to find people cheering and praising death...death by abortion. I prayed again this morning after reading these news articles and these tweets. I prayed, "Father, forgive us of our sin." I opened my Bible and turned to Jeremiah 1. In verse 5, I read, "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations." God is the One who created Jeremiah. He knew Jeremiah before he was formed in his mother's womb. I believe God knew me before I was formed in my mother's womb. I believe I have life today because God breathed life into my nostrils. I believe God created. I believe God created me to live with intention and purpose.
As Christ followers, we must use love and truth together. We must not allow our emotions to overwhelm us and say things that shouldn't be said or act out in ways that we shouldn't act. We must share God's Word...the truth...in love to a world that needs to hear it. I believe in a human being's rights. But I believe in the rights that God has given...rights even for unborn children whom God knew before they were ever in their mothers' wombs. If you are reading this and you are a woman who has had an abortion, I want you to know that I am not against you or angry at you. I want you to know that God loves you. I want you to know that God has a plan for you. I want you to know that God can and will forgive you and restore you to Himself. You can move forward in life and experience God's best! And if, by chance, you are a lawmaker reading this, I want you to know that God loves you. God has actually placed you in a position where you can help protect the God-given rights of every person...those outside the womb and those inside the womb. I am not angry at you, and I am not going to attack you. Instead, I am going to pray for you. I am going to continue to share the truth of God's Word to the people you represent and lead. I am a Christ follower, and I am not ashamed of the gospel. I will stand with the Word of Truth, which states in Genesis 1:27, "So God created..."
