"Teach me, Lord, the way of your decrees, that I may follow it to the end. Give me understanding, so that I may keep your law and obey it with all my heart. Direct me in the path of your commands, for there I find delight. Turn my heart toward your statutes and not toward selfish gain. Turn my eyes away from worthless things; preserve my life according to your word." Psalm 119:33-37
One of the obstacles I face each and every day that I live is SELF! I get in the way of so many good things God has in store, not only for me but also for others. I am a SELFish man. I see and I hear and I want. Isn't that the problem we all have faced since creation? Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden??? They had it all. God gave them paradise. He was meeting their needs. Then, they heard the serpent, they saw the tree, and they had to have it! One sin that plagues us all is SELFishness. We are so SELFish!
Jesus said in Luke 9:23, "Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me." He didn't say, "If you want to follow me then join a church." He didn't say, "If you want to follow me then tithe." He didn't say, "If you want to follow me then do good deeds for other people." Those are all good things. But following Jesus isn't about being good. It is about living in His righteousness, not our own. Following Jesus is about denying SELF. Following Jesus is about taking up the cross daily. Today, I have to begin by asking God to forgive me for my SELFishness. I have to ask God to empty me and fill me with His Spirit. Today I claim humility for my life. Philippians 2:3 says, "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves." Today, I want to follow Jesus. Today, I want to take up the cross. So today, I have to begin by denying SELF.
