"Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you." Exodus 20:12
When I was a child, I loved going over to my Aunt Nancy's house. She had a huge picture Bible, and she would lay down on the bed with me at night and read it to me. One of the stories in this picture Bible that she would read over and over again was the story about the Ten Commandments. I used to ask her, "Why do you read this story to me more than the others?" She would always reply, "God's commandments are important, and He wants us to obey Him so that we will be blessed." Aunt Nancy would always put her finger on the fifth commandment: "Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you." She said, "Jeffrey Paul, you should always honor your mom and dad because they love you. You treat them with respect and do what they tell you to do. The Bible tells us that we will live long if we honor our moms and dads."
I look back at those nights I spent with my Aunt Nancy reading me the Ten Commandments from that big picture Bible. I remember her stressing to me to honor my mother and my father. God truly blessed me with a great mom and dad. When I got married, He blessed with a great mother-in-law and a great father-in-law. As a kid and even sometimes as an adult, I haven't always agreed with my parents or my in-laws. However, I have always tried to honor them and respect them. I thank God for the times I've had with my parents and my in-laws. My father passed away when I was 16. My father-in-law passed away a few years ago, and my mother-in-law passed away a year ago today. I miss them all dearly. I thank God that I still have my mom today. And no matter whether your parents or in-laws have passed on or are still with you today, you can continue to honor them and respect them in all that you say and do! Just as my Aunt Nancy taught me this important command from God's Word all those years ago, I find that I am now teaching it to my children, as well. "Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you."
