"He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, 'Quiet! Be still!' Then the wind died down and it was completely calm." Mark 4:39
When I was a young boy, I went deep sea fishing off the coast of Alabama. I remember that trip well. I remember it well because I got sick. The waves crashed back and forth against the boat. The wind was whipping us back and forth, and I couldn't take it. It was one of the worst experiences I have ever had. Since then, I've gone deep sea fishing several times; thankfully, I haven't gotten sick like that again!
In Mark 4, we see the incredible story of Jesus calming the storm. Mark 4:37-41 says, "A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to hi, 'Teacher, don't you care if we drown?' He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, 'Quiet! Be still!' Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. He said to his disciples, 'Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?' They were terrified and asked each other, 'Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!'" In Mark 3, Jesus chose the twelve who would walk with Him and learn from Him. We don't know exactly how much time passed between that moment on the mountainside when He called these twelve men and this moment in the boat during the furious squall, but it wasn't long. Perhaps the disciples didn't fully understand the power Jesus was given by the Father. Perhaps the storm was so great that they were so focused on the winds and the waves that they forgot Jesus was even in the boat with them. Perhaps it was both of these things. But Jesus did have the power of God in Him. But Jesus was with them. Jesus calmed the storm! Then He asked two simple but powerful questions: "Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?" These men had already seen Jesus drive out an impure spirit from a man in the synagogue. How did He do it? He said to the impure spirit, "Be quiet! Come out of him!" And the impure spirit obeyed His commands. These men had seen Jesus heal Simon's own mother-in-law of fever. They had seen Jesus heal a man of leprosy. And here they were in the boat, the wind whipping it around and the waves crashing overboard. They were afraid that they were going to drown. And then they woke the Master. He was with them. He again demonstrated His power, and He saved them by calming the storm. What a faith challenge!
Are you facing the whipping wind and the crashing waves of life right now? Are you afraid? Are you lacking faith? Turn to Jesus. He is with you in the boat. He can calm the storms in your life. But He can also calm you. Nowhere in the Bible are we promised an easy life or even a safe life. However, God promised many times in the Bible that He would never leave us or forsake us. Trust in God's plan and in His power. He is with you. He may choose to calm the storm in your life, but He may choose to calm you. Either way, you can and will have peace in the midst of the storm when you turn to Jesus.
