"The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it." John 1:5
When I was a kid, I used to be afraid of the dark. I wanted my dad to sleep in my bed with me. I wanted a night light, but that was never enough. I had to keep the hall light on or keep the light on in my closet. Darkness was never my friend. Even today, my children have problems with darkness. I've talked to a lot of people who have said the same things. They were afraid of the dark as children, and now their children are afraid of the dark. Darkness is something we all have to deal with...in more ways than one.
John 1:1-5 says, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through Him all things were made; without Him nothing was made that has been made. In Him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it."
Back when I was kid, I had to overcome my fear of the darkness rather than letting the darkness overcome me. My dad was the one who helped me the most as a kid. Today I am trying to help my kids overcome that same fear: darkness. My kids are getting there one day at a time:) And then I come to this passage of Scripture and I realize that there is another darkness that has to be overcome: the darkness of sin. And much like I needed my father to come and turn the light on for me then, I need my Father to turn the light on for me now. God sent His One and only Son into the world to give us life and to give us light. He saves us from our sins, and He restores us into a right relationship with the Father. Darkness no longer enslaves us with fear. The Light overcomes the darkness with His love. Have you embraced Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and as Light in your life? Until you do, darkness will always have a place in your life. It doesn't have to be that way. Jesus is the Light that overcomes the darkness. Believe it and embrace Him today!
