"The Lord God said, 'It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him." Genesis 2:18
The creation story in Genesis is one of the most amazing stories told in the Bible. God created! Our world, our universe, and everything in it was created by God; this was no accident or natural consequence. God created! And God created mankind. Genesis 1:27 says, "So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them." What we see clearly in the creation story, and throughout the Bible, is that we were created for relationship. We were created for relationship with the Creator. We were created for relationship with each other. After God created Adam, He place him in the Garden of Eden, a paradise. God gave him plants and animals and responsibility. But God still recognized a need in Adam's life: relationship. Genesis 2:21-22 says, "So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man's ribs and then closed up the place with flesh. Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man." Relationship is important.
Think about the times when you laugh alone. Those times are not the same, not as vibrant as when you laugh with someone else. Think about the times when you cry alone. Those times are not the same as when you cry with someone else. Whether we are filled with joy or filled with sorrow or pain, relationships with others complete us. We don't truly know who we are until we know God, the Creator. He reveals Himself to us through His Word and through His Spirit. As we embrace God and His love for us, we begin to understand that we were created for relationship...relationship with Him and relationship with each other. It is a beautiful part of the creation story. I am thankful for relationships in my life. I was made for relationship.
