"Every word of God is flawless; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him." Proverbs 30:5
When it rains, we pull out the umbrellas to protect us from getting wet. When the winds begin to blow hard, we go indoors so we don't get blown away. When we see lightning strike in the skies, we seek shelter so we don't get zapped. Nature has a unique way of teaching us that at some point we all need refuge. Refuge means "a shelter or a place of protection from danger." Proverbs 30:5 says, "Every word of God is flawless; he is a SHIELD to those who take REFUGE in him." I don't know what kind of storms or trials you are facing in your life. Maybe it is a simple but steady rain. Maybe the winds are blowing hard and out of control. Maybe lightning is flashing violently all around you. Maybe your skies are clear at the moment, but let me warn you...storms and trials will come. James 1:2-4 says, "Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, WHENEVER you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything." James doesn't say "if." He says, "whenever." James goes on to say in verse 6, "You must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave on the sea, blown and tossed by the wind." As Christ followers, we can trust in the Word of God. It is flawless. His Word teaches us to rely on Him, to take refuge in Him. God is our shield when the storms and the trials of life come at full force. We don't have to be "like a wave on the sea, blown and tossed by the wind." We can take refuge in God. That is why, as Christ followers, we can "count it pure joy." We know that the storms and the trials of life, whenever they come, will help grow our faith in God, our Shield and our Refuge.
