Today I am teaching a "Biblical Church Membership" class at my church. Many people have the misconception that church membership is like a country club membership, with perks and privileges. However, nowhere in Scripture will you find that description of church membership. Church membership is about becoming part of a connected family group. Church membership is about serving God and serving others. Church membership is about laying down my rights and privileges, if I have any, and surrendering to God's authority. If you don't have it yet, I highly recommend you pick up a copy of Thom S. Rainer's book, I Am A Church Member. It is a great read for the church member. In his book, Rainer defines six attitudes that every church member should embrace in order for the church to be all that God has created her to be. For me, it all comes down to Luke 9:23, where Jesus said, "Whoever wants to be my disciple must DENY THEMSELVES and TAKE UP THEIR CROSS DAILY and FOLLOW ME."
