The storms reveal much…

"A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped.  Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion.  The disciples woke him and said to him, 'Teacher, don't you care if we drown?'"   Mark 4:37-38

Isn't it amazing that when things are going just as we planned or even better than we planned, we lift our hands to the sky and praise God.  We give Him all the credit and all the glory when the skies are clear, when the wind is peaceful, and when the waters are still in our lives.  However, when the the clouds cover the sun, when the winds begin to beat against our souls fiercely, and when the waters begin to splash into the boat, we begin to question God and His care for our lives.  In Mark 4:35-41, we see a story that speaks truth even to us today.  The storms reveal much about who we really are and about where our faith level really is in this journey called life.  The disciples were leaving the banks of the lake where Jesus was teaching a crowd of people.  They decided to get into a boat with Jesus to travel to the other side of the lake.  Perhaps they wanted to get away from the crowds.  Perhaps they wanted some peace and quiet.  Perhaps they wanted some time with Jesus on their own.  Mark 4:36-41 says, "Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat.  There were also other boats with him.  A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped.  Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion.  The disciples woke him and said to him, 'Teacher, don't you care if we drown?'  He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, 'Quiet! Be still!'  Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.  He said to his disciples, 'Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?'  They were terrified and asked each other, 'Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!'"   This storm in the lives of the disciples revealed much about their faith...or lack of faith.  These men were early in their faith journey with Jesus, and they still had much to learn from Jesus.  Jesus asked them, "Why are you so afraid?  Do you still have no faith?"  I wonder today, if Jesus were in the boat with us, would He have to ask those same questions?  Many of us (CHRIST FOLLOWERS) still struggle when we face the cloudy skies, the fierce winds, and the crashing waves.  We tend to ask God questions like, "Why me, Lord?" or "Where are You, God?"  One thing I like about this story in Mark 4 is that when the disciples faced their fear, they went straight to Jesus.  They heard Jesus speak many times and they saw what Jesus could do on the banks and in the streets and in the homes.  They went to Jesus with their fear, and Jesus used the storm to teach them, yet again.  In this story Jesus chose to calm the storm.  However, in other stories throughout the New Testament, Jesus chooses to calm His children.

I don't know where you are in life right now.  You may have clear skies, refreshing winds, and calm waters.  You may have cloudy skies, fierce winds, and crashing waves.  But if you are a child of God, you have Jesus!  And Jesus is all you need, whether He chooses to calm the storm or He chooses to calm you!  Jesus is all you need!  Run to Him and take Him your fears.  Allow Him to teach you more about yourself and where you are in this faith journey, and allow Him to teach you more about who He is and what He can do.  Remember, the storms will come in your life.  And the storms reveal much...
