Free indeed!

"Jesus replied, 'Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.  Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever.  So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed."   John 8:34-36

Sin is a powerful thing.  Sin enslaved us from the very beginning.  Since Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden, mankind has struggled with sin.  The consequences of sin have been disastrous.  Even our world has been subjected to the consequences of sin.  Romans 8:19-22 says, "For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed.  For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the freedom and glory of the children of God.  We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time."  Creation has been waiting for liberation...freedom from the bondage and the consequences and the penalty of sin.  In John 8, a woman caught in adultery was brought before Jesus.  The Pharisees tried to trap Jesus because He had been preaching about the forgiveness of sins and about being set free from the bondage of sin.  However, these men knew the Law, and they wanted to see the Law enforced.  They wanted to see Jesus act against His own teachings.  But in John 8:7 Jesus said, "Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her."  Verse 9 says, "At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time."  Then Jesus told the woman, "Then neither do I condemn you.  Go now and leave your life of sin."  Jesus lived a life free of sin, and through His death on the cross and the resurrection He freed us from the penalty and the power of sin.  He paid the price for all our sins in one excruciating moment on the cross.  When we admit our sin before God and repent of our sins and trust in the work and life of Jesus Christ, we are free!  Jesus said in John 8:36, "So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed."  Thank God for Jesus and the sacrifice He made for us!  We no longer have to live a life enslaved by sin!  We no longer have to face the penalty of sin, which is eternal separation from God in a place called hell!  We are free!  We are free indeed!
