Thankful for friendship…

Jonathan said to David, "Go in peace, for we have sworn friendship with each other in the name of the Lord, saying, 'The Lord is witness between you and me, and between your descendants and my descendants forever.'"   1 Samuel 20:42

I am thankful for so many things in my life.  God has been so good to me in many areas.  I have a godly wife and beautiful children.  I have a job that I love and that allows me to provide for my family.  I have been through heartaches and trials that have allowed me to grow in my faith with God.  And I have friends.  I am thankful for friendship.  Proverbs 18:24 says, "One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother."  I am thankful for the reliable friends God has given me throughout my life.  When I think of friendship, I can't help but turn to the pages of 1 Samuel.  David had a reliable friend, as well.  His name was Jonathan, son of King Saul.  When King Saul was pursuing David to take his life, David turned to and trusted Jonathan.  In turn, Jonathan trusted David and loved him.  1 Samuel 20:16-17, says, "So Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David and saying, 'May the Lord call David's enemies to account.'  And Jonathan had David reaffirm his oath out of love for him, because he loved him as he loved himself."  After Jonathan learns of his father's will to kill David, Jonathan reminds David in 1 Samuel 20:42, "Go in peace, for we have sworn friendship with each other in the name of the Lord."  Jonathan was a friend that stuck "closer than a brother" to David.  I am thankful for the friends in my life who stick "closer than a brother."  I am thankful for the friends in my life who love me as they love themselves.  God is so good to me, and I am thankful.  In return, I want to be the kind of friend that Jonathan was to David.  I want to love my friends as I love myself.  I want to stick close to them, "closer than a brother."  Are you thankful for friendship in your life?  Do you want to be that kind of friend who loves and sticks "closer than a brother?"  Pray a prayer of thanksgiving to God for those friends and petition God to give you the heart to be that kind of friend, and He will do it.

I would love to hear your comments...
