"Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of the God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things." Colossians 3:1-2
As Christ followers, one of our daily struggles is with the "things" of this world. We love our "things" of this world. What are some of those "things," you ask? It could be money. It could be homes. It could be cars or trucks. It could be clothes. It could be jewelry. It could be hobbies. It could be spouses. It could be children. The "things" of this world could actually be good; they could actually be blessings from God in the beginning. However, when the "things" of this world begin to take precedence over the One who gives them, that is when they become a problem for us. That is when the struggle begins. Paul tells us in Colossians 3 to "set your hearts on things above" and to "set your minds on things above." The verb set actually means "to put something in a PARTICULAR place." In other words, I believe Paul is telling us to put our hearts and minds in a PARTICULAR place - above the "things" of this world. He is not saying don't enjoy the blessings from God. He is merely saying put them in the right place, a PARTICULAR place. Jesus told us what should come first for the Christ follower in Matthew 22:37-38. Jesus replied: "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment." Let's not get so tangled up and captivated by the things of this world that we lose sight and place of the things above.
