Walking and living in love…

"Follow God's example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God."   Ephesians 5:1-2

I remember a long time ago as a small boy watching my Uncle James in the garden.  He was planting tomato plants, and I was his big helper.  However, I had never planted them before.  I remember watching his hands carefully, and I remember trying to dig in the dirt the way he did.  I remember trying to put the tomato plants in the ground the way he did.  I even remember watching him walk in front of me and seeing his footprints in the dirt.  I remember taking giant steps while trying to keep my little footprints inside of his footprints.  Everything I learned in the garden, I learned from watching my Uncle James.  As I got older, my Uncle James eventually would let me do it all: row up the soil with the tractor, walk down the rows planting seeds, and moving the water hoses throughout the  field.  I did it just like he did it.

Paul reminded the Ephesians that if they wanted to know how to live and to love, then all they had to do was follow Jesus' example.  He told them in Ephesians 5:2 to "walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself for us."  Paul told the Ephesians to "live as children of light" in Ephesians 5:8.  He went on to warn them in Ephesians 5:15-16, "Be very careful, then, how you live - not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil."  Jesus told his followers in John 13:34-35, "A new command I give you: Love one another.  As I have loved you, so you must love one another.  By this, everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."  If you want to know how to walk in love and to live in love, all you have to do is look to Jesus.  Just like I looked to my Uncle James to learn how to garden, I am now looking to Jesus to learn how to walk and to live in love.  If we are Christ followers, shouldn't we be following Him in every way?  Let's be Christ followers who are known for walking and living in love.

I would love to hear your comments...
