A light on my path…

"Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path."   Psalm 119:105

Back when I was a kid, I used to love going to Vacation Bible School...or as we called it, VBS.  It was one of the best week's of the summer for me and many kids.  VBS was a place where we could learn Bible stories, make crafts, and sing songs.  I remember saying the pledges, too.  We said the pledge to the American flag, the pledge to the Christian flag, and the pledge to the Bible.  I remember one time I was asked to hold the Bible while everyone said the pledge.  It was something that I will never forget.  "I pledge allegiance to the Bible, God's Holy Word.  I will make it a lamp unto my feet, a light unto my path, and hide it's words in my heart that I might not sin against God."  Even to this day, I still love VBS.  I still love watching the kids file into the worship center.  I still love hearing the songs, saying the pledges, and making the crafts.  But it all started back then, when I was kid learning about the Bible.  That pledge taught me more than I could ever imagine.  The Scripture in Psalm 119:105 says it best: "Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path."  God's Word is life to me.  It is light to me.  John 1:1-5 says, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  He was with God in the beginning.  Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.  In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.  The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it."  The Word is the light on my path.  The Word is life to my soul.  The Word is God.  John goes on to say in John 1:14, "The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.  We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth."  The Word is Jesus.  Jesus is my light and my life.  Today, I understand more than ever the pledge that I took to the Bible as a young boy during Vacation Bible School.  And today, I continue to take that pledge to the Bible.  It is a light on my path!
