"We love because he first loved us." 1 John 4:19
Happy Valentine's Day! I know many men are giving flowers, candy, and other gifts to their beautiful wives today. Today is a day we celebrate love for one another. But I was reminded in the Word today that love originated with God. As a matter of fact, John tells us in 1 John 4:16, "And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. GOD IS LOVE. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them." John tells us that GOD IS LOVE. He goes on to tell us in 1 John 4:19, "We love because HE FIRST LOVED US." How much does God love us? He loves us so much that He gave His only Son to die for us so that we might live and so that we might love. God's love for us actually gives us the capacity to love Him in return through Jesus Christ. God's love for us actually gives us the capacity to love others the way Jesus Christ loved us…sacrificially. Earlier in 1 John 4:7-11, John said it this way: "Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because GOD IS LOVE. This is how God showed his love among us: He sent His one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but the he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another." As we celebrate love for one another today, let's remember that GOD IS LOVE. Let's remember that HE FIRST LOVED US. Let's remember that He loved us so much that He gave…even while we were sinners, He gave!
