"But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." Acts 1:8
Acts 1:8 records the last words that Jesus spoke to His followers before He ascended. His words were a promise and a command. As a Christ follower I receive power from the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit indwelled me when I admitted my sin before God and believed in Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior with all of my heart. And as a Christ follower, I am commanded to be a witness of the life change that Jesus Christ has brought me. How can I be a good witness for Christ? First of all, I have to trust in the power of the Holy Spirit who is in me. He gives me the power to speak the truth, both with my words and my actions. He gives me the power to go to those who need to hear the truth, no matter what boundaries may exist. Secondly, I must walk as Jesus walked. I must love as Jesus loved. Jesus said in John 15:12, "My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you." Verses 13-17 go on to tell me that this is a sacrificial love, not just a casual love. 1 John 3:16-18 takes it even further for me: "This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth." Love is more than a word that casually flies from my mouth; love is an action that explodes from the heart! And lastly, we must have compassion on everyone. Jesus told the parable of the good Samaritan in Luke 10. A priest and a Levite walked right past a man who was robbed and beaten. They did absolutely nothing for this man. However, a Samaritan came along and took pity on this robbed and beaten man. He showed mercy. And Jesus tells us in Luke 10:37, "Go and do likewise." If I want to be a good witness for Christ, then I must walk as Jesus walked. I must love as Jesus loved. I have the power of the Holy Spirit to lead me and to guide me and to equip me for every opportunity that God gives me. May others see Christ in me today...everywhere my feet may take me!
