"Then Jesus came to them and said, 'All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.'" Matthew 28:18-20
Easter weekend has ended. What happens next? After Jesus rose from the grave, the disciples went to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. I wish I could have seen their faces and read their minds that day. Maybe they thought that He would continue to walk with them the way He had always done. Maybe they thought that He was going to now rule over the earth with supreme power and authority. Maybe they thought that He would rescue them from the earth and take them with Him wherever He was going. However, we know the rest of the Easter story. Jesus does return to them, but He doesn't return to them the way He was with them before. He returns to them from the grave, and He gives them an important task. The disciples were commissioned by Jesus to be His hands and His feet to a dying and lost world. His command was to GO! It wasn't to sit around and mope. It wasn't to wait on someone else to come and lead them. Jesus' command was to GO! His command included making disciples and baptizing new believers and teaching everyone His commands. And Jesus also made them a promise: "And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." So for Christ followers today, what happens after Easter? It hasn't changed in over 2,000 years: we GO! Let's follow Jesus' commands that He gave the disciples all those years ago. Let's be the hands and the feet of Jesus to a dying and lost world today. GO!!!
