"But at the beginning of creation God made them male and female. For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh. So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate." Mark 10:6-9
I performed a wedding this past weekend, and I was reminded of the amazing gift of marriage that God has given us. Marriage is a gift from God that we should treasure! Marriage is a gift from God that we should no only treasure but also protect. I overheard some comments recently about marriage that disturb me. Someone said, "Marriage today just isn't the same as it used to be." Someone else said, "Marriage is whatever we make it out to be." Another person said, "Marriage is a legal contract between two people, and it doesn't matter their race or their sex, as long as the government allows it." Wow!!! We have really messed up God's beautiful gift of marriage! Sure, we all have a right to an opinion, but just because we have an opinion on a subject doesn't mean that we are right about it. Marriage was given to us by God. Marriage is defined by God. Nothing we can say or do will ever change what God created. Genesis 1:27 says, "So God created mankind in His own image, in the image of God He created them; male and female He created them." In Genesis 2:18, God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him." God created Eve and brought her to Adam in the Garden of Eden. God told them in Genesis 1:28, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it." God created the male and the female in a beautiful and sexual way so that only a male and female together could reproduce and be fruitful and increase in number. God created the male and the female in a beautiful and sexual way so that only a male and female together could become one flesh. There is nothing we can say or do to change that! There is no one who can say or do anything to change that!
I know that today there is much conflict over the debate on whether gay marriage. Is gay marriage right or wrong? Should gay marriage be allowed or not? And I know that my personal beliefs will be attacked. I know that there will be those who label me with many words that really don't describe me at all. And that's ok. I believe God's Word! God's Word is the truth for me! Nothing and no one will ever change that for me. Culture will not change that for me. I love what Hebrews 13:8 says: "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever." Culture did not and culture does not change Jesus or His words. Malachi 3:6 says, "I the Lord do not change." James 1:17 says, "Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows." I believe God's Word! God's Word says that marriage is a gift from Him. God's Word says that marriage is between a man and a woman. God's Word is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. I can't add to it, and I can't take away from it. With that being said, I believe God's Word as the truth in my life. That is who I am. However, God's Word does not give me the right to treat people in a demeaning or a degrading way. God's Word does not give me a right to force my beliefs on other people. As a matter of fact, God's Word tells me to love people...all people...even people who don't agree with my beliefs. Jesus told us in Matthew 5:43-48, "You have heard that it was said, 'Love you neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect." I know this is one of those passages that we say is easier said than done, but as Christ followers we must embrace this passage! We must love and pray for our enemies. Jesus told us Matthew 10:22, "You will be hated by everyone because of me, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved." In John 15:18-19, Jesus said, "If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you." So let me make this as clear as possible: I am a Christ follower, and I believe God's Word completely. I believe that marriage is a gift from God and that God is the only one who can define marriage. I believe that marriage is created only for a man and a woman. I do not hate anyone. I do not demean or degrade anyone. I love and pray for everyone, even and especially those who disagree with me or those who do not know God or value God's Word as the truth...the truth that has not changed...the truth that is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Marriage is gift from God between a man and a woman, and the two will become one flesh.
