He Makes His Steps Firm

"If the Lord delights in a man's way, he makes his steps firm; though he stumble, he will not fall, for the Lord upholds him with his hand."   Psalm 37:23-24

I was looking through some old pictures just the other day, and I found some pictures of my son Jacob learning to walk.  He was pulling himself up and trying to move from the couch to the toys in front of the television.  In one picture, you could see the fear in his face when I let go of his hand.  In another picture, you could see me helping him as he stumbled and guiding him along the way to his toys.  He was looking up at me with a smile on his face, and I was looking down at him with an even bigger smile on my face.  I couldn't help but think about the passage of Scripture in Psalm 37:23-24.  The writer says, "If the Lord delights in a man's way, he makes his steps firm; though he stumble, he will not fall, for the Lord upholds him with his hand."  Many times we think about our delight in God.  He does so many things to us and through us and for us; we can't help but delight in Him, our gracious and compassionate Father.  But this passage talks about the delight that God has in us.  If we are walking with God and doing what Moses said in Deuteronomy 6...observing God's commands, teaching our children to fear the Lord, loving God with all our hearts and with all our souls and with all our strength...then God will delight in us.  Deuteronomy 6:2-3 says that we "may enjoy long life" and that it "may go well" with us and that we "may increase greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey."  The writer in Psalm 37 reminds us that when God delights in us, "he makes his steps firm."  God is walking with us, and in fact, the Holy Spirit is in us.  God's presence in us guides us on solid ground.  Sure, there are times when we may stumble; however, God will catch us.  The psalmist says, "He will not fall, for the Lord upholds him with his hand."  Moses knew about the hand of God.  Moses saw the hand of God do incredible works in Egypt during the Exodus.  But Moses also felt the hand of God on his own life, as he walked between the waters on dry and solid ground.  Moses felt the hand of God on his own life when he led a large group of complaining and inconsiderate people through the wilderness to the promise land.  Christ follower, take heart today and know that God is with you!  If you are walking with Him through a relationship with Jesus Christ and if you are living out His Word daily, then God will make your steps firm.  God will lift you up when you stumble.  God will actually delight in your way, and His firm hand will be upon you.  Believe it today!  Claim it today!  Live it today!

I would love to hear your comments...
