In Matthew 4, Jesus begins to preach His message to the world: "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near." Soon after Jesus began preaching His message to the world, He went out to find men to walk with Him and to eventually preach His message, as well. Matthew 4:18-20 says, "As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 'Come, follow me,' Jesus said, 'and I will send you out to fish for people.' At once they left their nets and followed him." Jesus went on to call more men to follow Him. Eventually these men would become leaders, but first they had to become followers.
Today, more than ever, we need strong leaders. We need strong leaders in our homes, in our schools, in our churches, in our communities, in our country, and in our world. The way to become a strong leader in any area of your life is to be a strong follower first. Before you can be a leader, you must be a follower. Jesus called people to follow Him. He equipped them and empowered them so that they could become the leaders He created them to be. Know that God created you in His image. Know that He is the creator and sustainer of all life. Know that Jesus Christ came to live and to die for you and for the world. Know that He alone is the Way and the Truth and the Life. Know that only through Jesus can we ever truly know God. Spend time with Jesus...in prayer...in worship...in the Word. And always remember, following comes before leading.
