One of my favorite worship songs is "How He Loves" by the David Crowder Band. Each and every time I hear this song and sing this song I can't help but think of John 3:16, especially the words, "For God SO LOVED." David Crowder sings, "He is jealous for me. He loves like a hurricane, and I am a tree bending beneath the weight of His wind and mercy." Crowder goes on to sing, "Yeah, He loves us. Oh how He loves us!" Exodus 20:3-5 says, "You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God."
Jonah prayed a prayer of repentance from the belly of the fish. Jonah called out to the Lord "from the realm of the dead." He turned back to God. Jonah 2:6b says, "But you, Lord my God, brought my life up from the pit." In his prayer of repentance, he also prayed these words: "Those who cling to worthless idols turn away from God's love for them." Jonah had been separated from God's amazing love because of his sin, and it was devastating. He wanted to be back in the presence of God, back in the presence of His amazing love. Jonah repented, and God heard his prayer and rescued him.
I wonder what worthless idols we are clinging to today??? I wonder if we understand the utter devastation that comes from the sin of idolatry??? I wonder if we realize that in bowing down to other gods we are turning away from God's amazing love for us??? Today, we need to search our hearts and lives. We need to recognize the idols that we are clinging to, and we need to let go of them. We need to turn to God in repentance. When we let go and when we repent, God will hear us. God will rescue us, and we can experience and grow in His amazing love for us! God loves us!!! Oh, how He loves us!!!
