Over the past couple of months at church, we've been studying the book of 1 Kings on Sunday nights. Throughout Israel's and Judah's history, they were led by a very few good kings and many, many bad kings. The leadership they endured was very inconsistent, to say the least. However, God was with them. God was constant and consistent. God was sovereign. God was good and faithful. The people of Israel and Judah did have to suffer consequences of choices they made as a people and the choices made by their kings. However, the people never had to suffer separation from God. He was always there. He was always in control. Throughout 1 Kings, and even throughout 2 Kings, we hear the phrase, "This is what the Lord says." God always had the final word. He worked His will for Israel and for Judah, whether there was a good king or a bad king on their thrones. The sovereign, good, and faithful God was in control.
This is a good word for us today. As a community, a state, and a nation, we have the privilege and the right to go to the polls to vote. I know that the media has thrown so much information at us over the past few days, weeks, and months. And I know that we are probably sick of seeing and hearing about politics. We have seen very little good, and we have seen so much bad. Today you may be discouraged and disheartened about what is going on in our community, our state, and our nation. Today you may be putting your hopes and your trust in a candidate, in a party, or in a government. Let me remind you of what the Bible tells us, not just in 1 and 2 Kings but throughout the Old and New Testaments: "THIS IS WHAT THE LORD SAYS!" God is sovereign, good, and faithful. He is not just the God of the past; He is also the God of the present and the future. His sovereignty and goodness and faithfulness have always been and will always be! As Christ followers, we should exercise our freedom to vote. We should make our voices heard in the world in which we live. As Christ followers, we should put our hope and our trust in God, not man and not government. God will always have the final word no matter who sits on our earthly thrones. Believe it! Claim it! Live it!
