"Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 'Honor your father and mother' - which is the first commandment with a promise - 'so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.' Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord." Ephesians 6:1-4
Each and every day that I wake up, I realize that I am a blessed man. I have a wife who loves the Lord and loves me, and I have children who love the Lord and love me. To have a family is a blessing from God, but to have a family is also a responsibility from God. It is easy for me to post pictures of me and my family when we are posed with smiling faces and postures that demonstrate love. It is not so easy, however, for me to post pictures of me and my family when we don't have smiles on our faces and our postures don't demonstrate love. Raising a family and growing together is difficult. We live in a sin-filled and broken world, and it seems that families are being attacked somehow and someway every minute on the hour. All of us, dads - moms - children, have egos and attitudes. All of us have desires and passions. We can be generous and compassionate one minute, and we can be selfish and brutal the next minute. And that's just within our families!
God's Word is clear about the blessings that come with family, and God's Word is clear about the responsibilities that come with family. As dads and moms, we owe it to our children to know what God's Word says to us about loving Him and loving one another. We owe it to our children to know what God's Word says to us about raising our children up in a godly way. And children, God's Word is clear to you, as well, about the blessings that come with a mom and a dad. But God's Word is also clear to you, children, about the responsibilities you have as part of the family. The best thing we can do together is study God's Word and submit to it within the realm of the family. We can study God's Word together. We can pray together. We can learn to love God more, and in turn, we can learn to love one another more. Does that mean that we will be perfect? No. Does that mean that everything will be easy and always go our way? No. However, it does give us the greatest chance to enjoy life together more deeply. It does give us the greatest chance to not only be blessed in this life as a family but to be a blessing to others in this life as a family. I can't imagine trying to raise up my children today without the Word of God. I can't imagine my family trying to live life with me without the Word of God.
Thank You, Lord, for blessing me with my family today. Thank You, Lord, for the responsibility You've given me to raise up my family in Your Word and Your ways today. Forgive me when I fail, when I fall in my responsibilities. Strengthen me so that I can be the man, the husband, and the father who leads my family well. May it be for Your glory and Your honor. Amen!
